CLINIC # 43: REPLACING EARLY PA16A380 STEAM ENGINE BRUSH SPRINGS

REPLACING PA16A380 BRUSHES & SPRINGS

TO REPLACE THE SLOTTED BRUSHES IN THE EARLY BRUSH BRACKETS:
First, you need to get the lever-style brush springs out of the way. To do this, use a pair of small needle-nose pliers to grasp the end of the brush spring which just barely protrudes from the back of the brush tube.
Pull the spring back toward you, and as it clears the back end of the brush tube, swing it upward and to the left. There is a very small notch in the brush bracket at the upper left of the opening. Swing the spring into that notch, and that will hold it out of the way so you can replace the brush. When done, swing the brush spring back into place in the tube.

TO REPLACE THE PA16A380 LEVER-STYLE BRUSH SPRINGS:
1) Unsolder the two wires from the two brush tube.

2)  Remove the 2 bolts and pull the brush bracket off the motor.

3) You should now be able to slide the old brush springs off the projections on the top of each brass brush tube. (It may first be necessary to melt excess solder from these projections, and shake it off.) Notice the orientation of the spring first.

4) Replace each spring with a new one (they are identical; there is no "right" or "left" spring).

5) With the brush springs mounted, swing them up over the top, and push the long end back through the brush tube.

You'll probably need to grab the tip of it with tweezers or needle-tip pliers to pull it all the way through.

You can then pull it up and to the left a bit diagonally, and snap it into the little notch in the brush bracket. That will hold the spring in place.

6)  Now re-mount the brush bracket with the two bolts.

7) Insert the brushes, and release the spring so it re-enters the tube. There should now be full tension against the brush.
