CLINIC # 19: RE-STRINGING THE 644 / 944 CRANES

  644 and 944 cranes were originally strung with either dark green or black cord. Two pieces are required. One piece is connected to the rear crank and operates the boom angle. It is shown by a dotted line in the diagram below, winding its way around all four pulleys on the hinged panel, and then being tied off at a small hole in the boom, just forward of the panel. The second piece is connected to the front crank and operates the hook and counterweight. It passes underneath the four-pulley hinged panel and above a horizontal support on the boom, before winding through the counterweight, fixed pulley, main hook, and a small hole in the end of the boom. It then ties off to the small hook, which hangs off the front end of the boom.


(NOTE: The picture above is of the later five-digit crane with plastic base and four-wheel trucks. It has a different boom, a simpler stringing pattern, and only the one main hook.)
