CLINIC # 16: ALUMINUM PASSENGER CARS: REMOVING THE FLOORS

In order to properly polish the shell, replace the window inserts, or service the internal wiring, it is often necessary to remove the sheet-metal floor from the shell. This is easier said than done!

If the trucks are positioned EXACTLY front-to-back, they will clear the sides, but it is tight. Be careful, as it is easy for the truck sideframe to catch on the corner of the side skirt "cutouts" and cause damage.

Before trying to slide the floor out, spray some silicone or some other lubricant along the edges of the floor so it will slide easier.

Spreading the sides a bit will help, but it is hard to do. Our Spreading Tool is a big help when trying to do this.

Then lightly tap the end of the floor with a ball-peen hammer to move it along.

Re-insert the floor the same way, again being very careful that the sideframes clear the side skirt cutouts.

Good luck.
