ELECTRONIC E-UNITS: $59.00
IN-SHOP INSTALLATION IN ANY STEAM OR DIESEL ENGINE: $79.00
(NOTE: if retaining the original motor, steam engines with smoke units will require
installation of a separate 2-pin disconnect.
Additional cost is $15.00
This is not required with can-motor installations.)
Can motor conversions are now available for the American Flyer 1946-1947 smoke-in-tender units. This is not a "kit" conversion, however, since the frame of your SIT unit has to be modified in the machine shop in order to properly accept the mounting bracket for the can motor, but the conversion is reversible should you ever want to re-install an original motor. This conversion will work very satisfactorily with either the original bellows system smoke unit, or with the cylinder system, resulting in very smooth and reliable operation.
Now, you can benefit from vastly improved operation of your tired 740 American Flyer handcars. Three options are available for this in-shop-only installation. This is not a "kit" conversion, however, since the frame of your handcar has to be modified in the machine shop in order to properly accept the can motor, and the conversion is not reversible.
If you want your old parts returned to you, add $20 to the above prices. These Gilbert AF units run noisy and hot, as they used an inexpensive Japanese motor, and burn-outs are not unusual. An in-shop can-motor conversion is now available for these. This is not a "kit" conversion, however, since the frame has to be modified in the machine shop in order to properly accept the can motor, but the conversion is reversible should you ever want to re-install an original motor.
You can now greatly improve the operation of your original AC Gilbert Baldwin switcher (355, 21808, etc) without causing any permanent alterations to the engine, and no longer will you risk the chance of burning up the motor during operation, as Gilbert Baldwin motors are prone to do.
If you operate DC, then the kit includes a DC can motor already mounted on a machined mounting-bracket, with all gearing already attached. Just remove the old motor, mount the new one, insert the lead weight (supplied), and connect the two wires to the motor!
If you operate AC, then the kit also includes a Dallee electronic reverse unit . We strongly urge you to install the Dallee reverse unit (removing the original Gilbert reverse-unit) because without doing so, there is no room to mount the lead weight. This lead weight, specially shaped for this installation, is quite necessary in order to realize significant improvement in operation and pulling power!
Your kit will come with complete instructions, including photographs of the installation process. Do not let this installation scare you.....it can be done in less than 30 minutes, and is very simple. Below are two pictures of the kit and its finished AC installation. (A DC installation would look the same, minus the electronic reverse unit.)
Customer Feedback:
"The Baldwin motor conversion worked just great! First time since I purchased the engine 30 years ago that it has operated! The can motor [steam-engine] conversion works great also. " R. Gabryszewski
IN-SHOP INSTALLATION: Send us your complete Baldwin switcher, and we will install the can-motor conversion for you.
DC can-motor and weight only, for DC operation.
AC installation, includes Dallee electronic reverse unit.
You can now also greatly improve the operation of your original AC Gilbert diesels with minimal alteration to the engine ! This is not a "kit" conversion, however, since the motored chassis of the engine has to be modified in the machine shop in order to properly accept the can motor, but the conversion is reversible should you ever want to re-install an original motor.
This VERY simple installation will replace your original Gilbert American Flyer steam engine motor with a strong, reliable can motor, for either AC ($42) or DC ($39) operation. Or $110 if combined with a Dallee electronic reverse unit.
There are NO permanent modifications made to your engine, so this conversion is reversible should you ever want to re-install the original motor and/or reverse unit
"Scale speed" option-- (either AC or DC): Operate your engine at about 50% of the "normal" speed, but get full voltage for the headlight, smoke-unit, and reverse unit operation! Same pricing.
0-8-0 Switchers--- We carry a special, shorter can motor for use only in the 0-8-0 engines. Same pricing.
21088 Franklin (or 21089 Washington) Engines--- We have a special can motor for these engines, supplied with an appropriate new bracket for the rear cab mounting. However, if you operate AC, you must install this motor with a new electronic e-unit. You cannot retain the original 2-position reverse unit.
For DC operation: $45 For AC operation: $99

The TIMKO steam-engine can-motors are quite similar, but also feature a flywheel mounted on the back. This results in a somewhat slower rate of acceleration and deceleration. (suggest use only in Hudson and Northern engines, due to weight and length.)
These are a kit option that can be ordered in place of our normal can-motor, at additional cost.
